About Us
Macoupin County was founded in 1829 and shortly thereafter, Tristrim P. Hoxey was elected the first County Clerk. Since then, there have been 27 County Clerk, each responsible for holding the County’s vital records in their custody. The County Clerk has made sure these documents have been protected for the individuals at the time of filing, but also for their families who later wish to see where their ancestors came from.
Macoupin’s current County Clerk, Pete Duncan, has worked with the County Clerk’s staff to make sure these treasured records are protected for history but still available for viewing today. The way in which the public could inspect vital records hadn’t changed much from when the County filed its first marriage back in 1829. There were large index books that pointed towards where the actual certificate was found. Duncan led the effort to scan all of the county’s vital records and create this website to allow anyone from around the world access to Macoupin’s genealogical records at any time.
State Statutes make all birth certificates over 75 Years, marriage licenses older than 50 years, and death certificates older than 20 years available as genealogical records.
This website allows visitors to search for free and the opportunity to purchase the actual record we have on file in a digital format.
All records are unofficial, as they are not certified for the County, and they remain for personal use in research of ancestral records.
